AI Visibility Audit Cost: What's Included and What to Pay
Published July 6, 2026 · BizWhiz research
AI visibility audit pricing in 2026 spans from free DIY to four-figure agency retainers: entry-level agency AEO programs run $1,000–$2,500 per month, one-time audits vary widely, and our report costs $249 one-time with $99/mo ongoing tracking. The price matters less than what’s inside — many things sold as “audits” are a screenshot and a sales call.
This page lists what a real audit must include and why, the red flags, the honest price landscape, and how to do a rough version yourself for free.
What a real audit must include
Six components. If a vendor can’t show you all six in a sample report, you’re buying something else.
A sampled question battery. AI answers vary between askings, between phrasings, and between systems. One question asked once measures noise. A real audit asks a fixed set of realistic customer questions — multiple intents, multiple phrasings, multiple AI systems — so the result is a rate, not an anecdote. Ours runs 20 localized prompts across 6 AI systems, producing 100+ answers per audit. The exact numbers matter less than the principle: no sampling, no measurement.
Raw, timestamped answers. You should be able to read every answer verbatim, with a timestamp. This is your protection against cherry-picking — a report that only shows summaries can show you whatever supports the invoice. We store every response as received, with a UTC timestamp, and quote verbatim; we never edit, paraphrase, or fabricate a model output. Demand the same from anyone.
A score with documented weights. A number is only meaningful if you know how it’s computed. Our 0–100 score weights mention rate 50%, prominence 20%, sentiment/accuracy 15%, source presence 15% — and those weights are published, so you can argue with them. A score with hidden methodology can’t be compared month to month or vendor to vendor, which is precisely why some vendors hide it. More on interpreting scores in what is a good AI visibility score.
Share of voice. Whether you’re mentioned is half the story; who’s taking the mentions you’re not getting is the other half. The audit should name the competitors appearing in your market’s answers and how often. That’s also your progress meter — visibility gained usually comes from a named competitor, not from thin air.
A citation-source inventory. Retrieval-backed answers cite the pages they drew from. The list of domains actually cited in your market is the single most actionable page in any audit, because it converts “improve your AI visibility” into “you’re absent from these specific sources the answers already rely on.” Every audit we run produces this inventory. An audit without it tells you that you have a problem but not where it lives.
A prioritized fix list. Findings without sequencing waste your time. The fixes should be ordered by observable leverage — in the local-business audits we run, presence on already-cited sources, consistent name/address/phone data, and a complete Google Business Profile predict visibility best, so that’s where a fix list should start. Generic advice (“post more content”) untethered from your citation inventory is filler.
Red flags when buying
- Guaranteed mentions or rankings. Nobody can pay OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, or Perplexity for placement in organic AI answers, and nobody controls what a model says. Honest framing is about improving the odds on the inputs AI systems observably rely on, measured over time. Guarantee language is the single fastest disqualifier.
- No raw data. If you can’t see the verbatim answers and timestamps behind the score, the score is unfalsifiable.
- One-answer “audits.” A screenshot of a single ChatGPT response — often the scariest one from several attempts — is a sales prop, not a measurement. Given answer variance, one response is compatible with almost any true visibility level.
- Scores with no methodology. “You scored 34” means nothing without the weights and the battery behind it.
- Claimed special access or partnerships. No vendor has an inside line to the models. Everyone measures the same way: by asking.
- Urgency pricing. The systems change weekly, but your visibility doesn’t collapse in a day. “Lock in before the algorithm update” is a pressure tactic, not a fact.
The price landscape, honestly
Ongoing agency programs. Entry-level AEO/GEO retainers run $1,000–$2,500 per month, scaling up from there. What you’re buying is implementation labor — content, listings work, schema, digital PR — with measurement bundled in. For a multi-location business or a competitive metro, that can be rational. The audit questions above still apply: ask what’s measured, how often, and whether you get raw answers.
One-time audits. Prices vary widely across the market, from low-cost automated reports to four-figure consulting deliverables, and price correlates loosely with quality in both directions. Judge by the six components, not the invoice.
Our version, for calibration. The BizWhiz report is $249 one-time: the full 100+ answer battery, raw timestamped answers, the scored result with published weights, share of voice, citation-source inventory, and prioritized fixes. Monthly tracking — the identical battery re-run so the trend is measured, not remembered — is $99/mo. Details on pricing. We sell measurement and prioritization; the fixes themselves are things you or your marketer can execute.
Free. A preliminary scan (3 questions × 2 models + Google, about 30 seconds, results emailed with a shareable results page) is at /audit — and the fully manual option is below.
Is the shift even worth paying to measure? Reason for yes: 37% of consumers now start searches with AI instead of Google, and Google itself moved Search to AI Mode in May 2026, so even “Google searches” increasingly return AI-composed answers. Reason for calibration: about 84% of US consumers still use Google daily for local business searches, and only about 24% prefer AI chat for local queries. The honest read is to be visible in both channels — which is why a real audit includes Google’s answer layer, not just chatbots.
The DIY audit, free
You can build a rough version of everything above yourself. Nobody’s paid product has secret access; audits differ in scale and discipline, not in kind.
Write 8–12 questions a real customer would ask — discovery, recommendation, comparison, and task-specific intents, each in two or three phrasings. Ask them in ChatGPT with search enabled, Perplexity, and Google. Log every answer in a spreadsheet: timestamp, system, prompt, mentioned or not, position, competitors named, verbatim quotes, cited domains. Tally your mention rate, list the most-cited sources, and mark which ones you’re missing from. That’s a legitimate baseline audit.
The honest cost accounting: expect one to two hours per monthly run for a modest sample across three systems — and the hard part isn’t the first run, it’s running it identically every month, because trend detection is the entire point. The full protocol, including what to track and where DIY stops scaling, is in how to monitor what AI says about your business. What paid audits buy is sample size (100+ answers vs. your 25), coverage (6 systems vs. 3), and mechanical consistency. Whether that’s worth $249 depends on your hourly rate and your market’s competitiveness — for some businesses, DIY is genuinely the right call.
What to do this week
- Run the free scan or a one-hour manual check. Get any baseline before spending money — you may find your problem is one wrong fact, not a program.
- Read the citations in whatever you get back. The cited domains are the to-do list any audit, paid or free, should produce.
- If evaluating vendors, request a sample report. Check it against the six components: battery, raw answers, documented score, share of voice, citation inventory, prioritized fixes.
- Ask every vendor the guarantee question. “Can you guarantee mentions?” The correct answer is no. Anything else, walk.
- Match the spend to the situation. Wrong facts only: fix them yourself for free. Want a measured baseline and trend: a one-time audit plus monthly tracking. Competitive metro, no time to execute: an agency retainer may fit — audit it the same way.
- Decide your measurement cadence before buying anything. Monthly is the useful interval; source fixes take days to weeks to propagate, so anything promising overnight movement is measuring noise.
The cheapest sensible first step is the free AI visibility scan — 30 seconds, and you’ll know whether you have a wrong-fact problem, a visibility problem, or neither.
Common questions
How much does an AI visibility audit cost?
One-time audits vary widely across the market, from cheap automated reports to four-figure consulting engagements. Ongoing agency AEO/GEO programs start around $1,000–$2,500 per month at the entry level. Our report is $249 one-time, with monthly re-audit tracking at $99/mo. Price alone tells you little — what matters is whether the audit includes a repeated question battery, raw timestamped answers, documented scoring, and a citation-source inventory.
What should an AI visibility audit include?
Six things at minimum: a sampled battery of realistic customer questions asked multiple ways, the raw answers stored verbatim with timestamps, a score with documented weights, share of voice against named competitors, an inventory of the sources the AI answers cited, and a prioritized fix list tied to those sources. An audit missing the raw answers or the citation inventory is a summary, not an audit.
Can I audit my AI visibility myself for free?
Yes. Ask ChatGPT with search enabled, Perplexity, and Google the questions a customer would ask — several intents, several phrasings — and log who's named, what's said, and which sources are cited. It costs an hour or two per run and requires doing it identically each month for trends. The paid version buys sample size, more systems, and consistency, not secret access.
What does AI audit readiness require?
Nothing technical — that's a reason to distrust anyone who says otherwise. A useful audit only requires that your business has a name, a category, and a market to measure. What helps you act on the results afterward: access to your Google Business Profile, your website, and your main directory listings, since that's where the fixes land.
